MP’s half-brother arrested over sex abuse claims

Detectives investigating historical child abuse claims in North Wales care homes have arrested the half-brother of senior Conservative MP John Whittingdale.

Charles Napier, 65, was held under a new strand of an existing investigation into alleged child abuse in the early 1980s at the Elm Guest House in Barnes, south west London.

Mr Whittingdale, 53, chairman of the Commons Culture, Media and Sport Committee, said of his half-brother’s arrest:

Child rapist’s jail term appeal fails

A child rapist who posed as a holy man to subject three victims to “satanic” sex abuse has failed to convince judges his 18-year prison sentence is too long.

The man claimed he had black magic powers and told the children, who were as young as 10, that if they did not submit to “religious massage”, evil spirits would remain in their bodies and their mothers would die.

The man was jailed at Leicester Crown Court after he was convicted in November 2011 of three counts of rape, one of another serious sexual offence and four counts of sexual activity with a child.

Three senior judges at London’s Court of Appeal this week rejected his challenge against his sentence, saying he had committed the crimes “under the cloak of religion” and deserved the sentence imposed.

The man had denied all the offences but was found guilty by a jury, with the sentencing judge saying he had “deliberately frightened the children” so he could carry out “satanic abuse”.

“He told the children he was a holy man and they were filled with evil spirits and that, to rid their bodies of the evil spirits and black magic, he had to massage them using an oil, otherwise their mothers would be killed,” the crown court judge said.

During the appeal, the man’s barrister, Nick Cartmell, argued the judge had misused the word “satanic” and may have imposed an excessive sentence as a result.

He said: “There is a world of difference between ritualistic abuse by a single man where he is invoking faith his victims already have and the induction of someone into a satanic cult where there is corruption, torture and far, far worse.”

A sentence of only 18 years, for raping a number of children as young as 10, and yet the defence barrister claims the children should have been tortured as well for a sentence of 18 years??? Since when is “corruption” a part of ritual abuse?

However, Lord Justice Jackson, said: “What the sentencing judge was saying was that he was using the pretence of religious ritual in order to obtain sexual gratification.

“That was a fair characterisation.

“He, under the cloak of religion or pretended religion, sexually abused all three children and took advantage of their religious faith and their trust in him and intimidated them by threatening dire consequences if the ritual was not observed.”

So, there were rituals as part of the satanic sexual abuse, and psychological threats – yet this is not being reporting as ritual abuse in the media.

The judge, sitting with Mrs Justice Thirlwall and Judge Clement Goldstone QC, concluded: “In our view, this was an entirely appropriate sentence.

“We therefore reject the suggestion that 18 years was too long or manifestly excessive.”

His victims range in age from 14 to 19 at the time of the offence. The 11 offences related to 7 different victims, with police deciding not to press charges in some additional reported crimes.

The BBC have announced that Rolf Harris has been arrested. I am aware that whenever there is any news about the allegations of sexual offences against Rolf Harris, The Needle receives a steep increase in traffic. Without wishing in anyway to seem unsupportive of the victims in this particular case, I’d like to take this opportunity to write about something far more widespread.
Over the last 40 years or more, the care home system in the UK has been targeted by paedophiles, producers of Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) material (child pornogaphy) , the trafficking of children for sexual exploitation, and on occasion the murder of victims, either because their deaths become sick entertainment , or because they knew too much.

Some of this has been extremely well organised and is not restricted to one or two local authorities. This is a problem that is widespread.

When I first became aware of this I felt ashamed of myself. I felt ashamed because I had assumed that the most vulnerable in our society, children in need of care of the state, were safe. To find out that that was not the case and that because, in part, of my ignorance, the sexual abuse of children was being exploited and perpetuated was very difficult.

But now I am no longer ignorant, now I know what has been going on. Ignorance is not a crime but to turn away once all ignorance has been dispelled is morally reprehensible.

There has been a systemic cover up of the truth. One reason for this is due to the fact that many child abusers hold great power, a second reason for this is because CSA is an underworld industry which makes a great deal of money and therefore corruption is rife, a third reason for this is because some people mistakenly thought that moving a problem elsewhere solved it, and finally because with so many powerful people implicated for the three previous reasons, it has become an issue of national security.

I’d like to appeal to every parent and grandparent who reads this. This is not just historic this is a very real child safeguarding issue today.

Now I’ve told you, now you know, remember the words of Edmund Burke, and do not turn away.

Catholic church in UK faces child sex abuse quiz: Operation Fernbridge update

The Sunday People has reported that a Catholic Bishop is under investigation as part of Operation Fernbridge, the police investigation into historic sexual abuse.

Operation Fernbridge is also looking into allegations boys in care in Richmond, south-west London, were sexually abused between 1977 and 1983 – initially at Grafton Close children’s home and then at Elm Guest House in nearby Barnes.

The first charges from this operation are expected within weeks.

The Met is also running Operation Fairbank to investigate alleged child abuse by senior political figures.

To use children for sexual purposes, whether through the wicked perversion of sexual abuse or through fantasies induced by child pornography, must provoke the strongest outrage and reaction from individuals and Government alike.

The Government has increased the penalties for child cruelty and tightened the law on child pornography by making possession of this material an offence but I am very concerned by recent reports of what is still occurring.

So last year and this year, we are making £7 million available to Local Authorities to train those involved in caring for children, particularly social workers, and student teachers are now taught about child abuse as an essential part of their preparation for teaching.

We are making the largest ever grant to the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children to help them to establish their new training centre.

We have also, as you mentioned, Mr. Chairman, reformed the law so that it is clear, effective and fair. The Children Act of 1989 is the most comprehensive piece of legislation about children ever enacted in this country; it draws on the experiences learned in Cleveland and through the tragic deaths or abused children such as Kimberley Carlisle, Jasmine Beckford and Tara Henry. Above all, the Act seeks the right balance in protecting those too young and vulnerable to protect themselves while preventing excessive and over-zealous intrusion into family life by the State; and in 1988, the maximum penalties for child cruelty were increased from the previous two years to ten years—and rightly so!

Some of these matters, to which we have all had to respond, reflect the darker side of human nature and in tackling them our greatest source of strength comes from that other side of human nature—the reserves of sheer goodness and goodwill which find practical expression every day.
