FB forced to act after #FBRape campaign

Daily mail reports:

Facebook agrees to block content that makes fun of sex assaults against women after furious campaign

  • Hashtag #FBRape had 50,000 tweets and 4,500  support emails in a week
  • Group say Facebook ‘allows content endorsing violence against women’
  • #FBRape calls on companies to pull adverts until Facebook bans material
  • Nissan, Nationwide UK and more have pulled ads until Facebook complies

Women’s action media reports:

Last Tuesday, Women, Action & the Media, the Everyday Sexism Project and author/activist Soraya Chemaly launched a campaign to call on Facebook to take concrete, effective action to end gender-based hate speech on its site. Since then, participants sent over 60,000 tweets and 5000 emails, and our coalition has grown to over 100 women’s movement and social justice organizations.

Today, we are pleased to announce that Facebook has responded with a important commitment to refine its approach to hate speech. Facebook has admirably done more than most other companies to address this topic in regards to content policy. In a statement released today, Facebook addressed our concerns and committed to evaluating and updating its policies, guidelines and practices relating to hate speech, improving training for its content moderators and increasing accountability for creators of misogynist content.

Facebook has also invited Women, Action & the Media, The Everyday Sexism Project and members of our coalition to contribute to these efforts and be part of an ongoing conversation. As part of these efforts, we will work closely with Facebook on the issue of how Community Standards around hate speech are evaluated and to ensure best practices represent the interests of our coalition.

from Huffington Post report – from 7 days after #FBRape began-

WAM is already claiming success, reporting that 15 companies – including Nissan UK, House of Burlesque and Nationwide UK, have pulled ads from Facebook.

On Tuesday Sky, American Express and Dove found themselves in the crosshairs.

Marketing Magazine reports Dove – which markets itself as a purveyor of products for “real women” – is now “working aggressively with Facebook to resolve the issue”.

Procter and Gamble’s response was: “We can’t control what content they [our advertising] pops up next to. Obviously it’s a shame that our ad happened to pop up next to it,” Think Progress reports.

While conceding Facebook has proven willing to crack down on other forms of hate speech, including anti-Semitic, Islamophobic and homophobic speech, an open letter calls on the company to take “swift, comprehensive and effective action addressing the representation of rape and domestic violence.”

Signed by over sixty feminist groups, it calls for Facebook to:

1. Recognize speech that trivializes or glorifies violence against girls and women as hate speech and make a commitment that you will not tolerate this content.

2. Effectively train moderators to recognize and remove gender-based hate speech.

3. Effectively train moderators to understand how online harassment differently affects women and men, in part due to the real-world pandemic of violence against women.

Disgraceful attack on those who report child sexual abuse (I Care – The Guardian’s Line in Concern Porn)

This appalling post uses many of the very well known strategies which attempt to convince people that child sexual abuse should not be openly discussed- i.e. “we must attack those who report it – let’s shut the up by accusing them of…something or other…”

The post below concerns me because…

  • it calls reporting on child sexual abuse crimes “concern porn” and “moral panic” – these are clearly your way to say people should not write or talk about child sexual abuse, and “moral panic” is a term coined by the pedophile run false memory syndrome foundation (setup by Peter & Pamela Freyd who still refuse to acknowledge their daughter’s extensive sexual abuse, despite others in the family confirming it)
  • Using the word “porn” here when talking about REPORTING rather than committing to criminal child sex offenses is totally inappropriate
  • Blaming this on “feminist writing” and “feminist’s favorite fairytales” is a common tactic amongst those who try to deny and minimize the impact of child sexual abuse and child rape  – this is about real crimes, real victims, real offenders and not fairytales
  • Suggesting that because some the crimes are from the 1970s and some of the perpetrators as dead makes it somehow less of a crime – child rapists are walking around having never accounted for their crimes, these should be brought to justice, coverups from the past should be exposed if future child abuse is to be prevented
  • Singling out the Guardian for this is just bizarre, given they published the pro-pedophile article “‘Paedophilia: Bringing Darkness into Light”
  • adding a mention of whether the age of consent should be lowered, this is not even relevant! Is this an attempt to say those pressing criminal charges “wanted” this contact to take place? Is this victim blaming?

Just what is your agenda here GraunWatch?

You Deserve… an End to Rape Culture

Dr. Kathleen Young: Treating Trauma in Tucson

Take Back the NightApril is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. On the University of Arizona campus we intensify our constant efforts to raise awareness of not only sexual violence but of the overall rape culture that supports such violence. Rape culture refers to the manner in which prevalent attitudes, norms, practices, and media condone, normalize, excuse, or encourage sexualized violence. These attitudes often take the form of victim blaming.

Just last week we held our Take Back the Night march and rally. With music, speakers, a resource fair, and an open mike survivor speak out, this was a moving and powerful event. I was so proud of all the survivors who spoke their truth and of the audience that held them with such compassion and support. It was truly an empowering and remarkable evening.

In the midst of this, we encountered a reminder of why we do what we do. A specific example of

Interview With Ruth Jacobs, Author and Anti-Trafficking Activist

interview with Ruth Jacobs, author of “Soul Destruction” and anti-trafficking activist

Bipolar For Life

I’m excited to have a guest on board here at Bipolar For Life:  Ruth Jacobs, author of the upcoming best-selling novel series Soul Destruction.  Part one of the series, Soul Destruction: Unforgivable, will be released worldwide on April 29, 2013.

Ruth Jacobs no border

Soul Survivor: Ruth’s gritty, hard-hitting novel features a more-or-less close-knit group of friends who have at least two things in common: drugs, and prostitution.  So what is this book doing on my blog, which tries its best to stay focused on mental health and child abuse issues?  Probably because this group of tough customers has more than just two things in common.

Let’s read a passage from Soul Destruction: Unforgivable, and then we can ask Ruth to help us understand.

Aunt Elsie made tea and they sat on their usual white stools at the white, plastic table in the kitchen. Elsie, as always, sat facing…

Is this the Northern Ireland paedophile who got Facebook to remove posts naming him?

Known only as XY, he issued proceedings against Facebook and Mr McCloskey [Joe McCloskey] over the contents of a page entitled ‘Keeping our kids safe from predators’. The man, who served a jail sentence for a catalogue of abuse, has now been granted permanent anonymity by a judge overseeing the resolution.

It emerged during the case that he has a total of 15 convictions for sexual offences committed between 1982 and 1989.
They include six charges of indecent assault, six counts of gross indecency with a child and a further one of inciting a child to commit an act of gross indecency.

He was released after serving half of a six year prison sentence, only to be detained for a further six months for breaching a condition of his licence.

He went to court after discovering his photograph and a string of threatening comments had been posted online.

In November last year, the social networking giant was ordered to take the page down due to the prima facie harassment and potential breach of the plaintiff’s human rights.

Although it was removed, a new page under the heading ‘Keeping our kids safe from predators 2’ soon appeared.

As part of a final settlement to the convicted paedophile’s legal action, Joe McCloskey also pledged on Thursday to immediately remove all references to him from online pages under his control.

Alan Kane QC, for XY, told the court: “I am happy to say the matter has been satisfactorily resolved and has been committed to writing, subject to an application in respect of the continuance of anonymity.”

Identity of paedophile: is this the right person?
Lawyers for Michael Sean Quinn, 24, claimed comments posted on anti-abuse campaigner Joe McCloskey’s personal page threaten the safety of him and his family.
Quinn, originally from Glasvey Drive, Twinbrook, is seeking an injunction against Mr McCloskey and the social networking giant to have the contents removed from the site.

He was jailed for eight years in 2007 for raping a teenage girl. Quinn attacked his victim, 15, in the city in August 2005 while she was on holiday from England. During the trial, it emerged that he later used the girl’s mobile phone to call her mother and state: “I enjoyed raping your girl.”

The Reality of Male Slavery: Human Trafficking

An extract from an excellent blog post http://davidshurter.com/?p=2670

The Dancing Boys of Afghanistan is an excellent documentary.

It disturbs me that many people associate human trafficking and the sex trade just with women, as it extends far beyond that, and is much seedier than most would like to consider. In a previous video I posted entitled “Boys for Sale”, it shows the propensity that many pedophiles have for the flesh of young boys, and how vast this extends, at least in Houston in the 80s. There is also another documentary called “Conspiracy of Silence” which shows the problems that were experienced here in Omaha during the bilking of 40 million dollars from the Franklin Credit Union. When you factor in groups such as NAMBLA (the North American Man Boy Love Association), whose motto is “sex before eight or it is too late”, and pedophile groups like that of “Dreamboard”, which has been found to be in existence decades before the internet, one must wonder why all of this has been allowed to exist openly in the public eye.

I just attended a program on human trafficking in Nebraska, and the key speaker spoke of two films- one a Frontline documentary entitled “The Dancing Boys of Afghanistan”, and another called “The Whisleblower” which depicts the speaker’s experiences coming forward and reporting that American government contractors are heavily involved with the human trafficking trade abroad. The problem that I had with this presentation is that while human trafficking is a huge problem for third world countries, it is also very prevalent and ongoing in the United States as well, and local law officials in the States are about as eager to investigate and prosecute these criminals as Afghanistan is, which is a really sad take on America if you ask me.

Young boys were a focal point in the events that took place here in Omaha, NE- in the center of the United States, here in the 80′s and early 90s, as well as being in Houston- where “Boys for Sale” was filmed. These are just two places in America that this was a problem- and yet over and over it is viewed as an issue for women in third world countries. This HAS TO BE FOR A REASON! Defying logic and what is known about the issues here in the States, depicting this problem as it has been is misleading and one must wonder why our media doesn’t spend more time investigating and reporting the facts of the matter rather than leading society to believe that it is only poor countries that have this problem.
