St Francis’s Boys’ Home, Shefford – “The home was the personification of hell.”

Founded in 1868 and open until 1974, St Francis’s Boy’s Home, Shefford, Bedfordshire, is thought to have been the longest serving children’s home in England.

In May this year, former residents of the home, who were physically and sexually abused by staff in the 1950s and 60s, formed a support group and decided to take the Catholic church to court.  Evidence has since emerged that Jimmy Savile was a visitor to the home.

MORE claims that Jimmy Savile visited a Catholic boys home accused of sexually and physically abusing its children.

For many years there have been allegations of abuse at the former St Francis Boys Home in Shefford.

The home was run by the St Francis Society, as part of the Catholic Church.
